Article by Jackie Murray:
IT ALL STARTED WITH A VISIONIt’s 1981 and the Margaretta Jr. High cheerleaders wanted to improve their skills by going to a cheer camp. They needed to find a way to pay for the camp. The idea of setting up a concession stand to raise the needed funds came about. Being a true visionary Bob Wright, father of cheerleader Lynn Wright-Sessler, went to work on the floor of the WR Farms shop measuring, cutting, and crafting a vision into what is now known as the Steak Barn. After a short time, Lynn and the Margaretta cheerleaders were in business. Cheer camp here we come! This was the beginning of a few years raising funds for cheer camps, new uniforms and all the things needed for cheerleading. On the Ohio State Fairgrounds at the intersection of Heritage, Cooper, and Dairy, a bigger vison took hold. Bob and Betty Wright met with the Ohio Cattleman’s Association and developed a plan to promote the Beef Industry at the Ohio State Fair. The plan was to serve cattle producers as well as fair goers with a quality product showcasing Beef that would continue from 1984-1991.After the 1991 Concession season, with one thing in common… the Steak Barn. Bob and Betty Wright passed the torch and the Steak Barn to its new owners, Jim and Jackie Murray – J & J Food Concession, and the vision would blossom. Some 29 years later, from 1992-2021 the vision is still glowing strong. Throughout the years Jim and Jackie have continued to work with Ohio Cattleman and Cattlewomen’s organizations to provide our consumers with the quality products to showcase our industry. The lines have continued to grow, and the Ribeye’s, Burgers and Chop Steak sandwiches, fries, and drinks have continued to be crowd pleasers. The continued volume has only been made possible by volunteer support from Ohio Cattleman, Cattlewomen, FFA Chapters, 4-H Clubs, and various other organizations. It is with great pride and a true sense of responsibility that Jim and Jackie will now pass the torch. We can only hope this long-standing vision continues.
